All communication is encrypted using TLS, so your data is very secure from the prying eyes. Syncthing has a responsive and powerful WebGUI which will help the users to easily add, delete and manage directories to be synced over network. Using Syncthing, you can sync multiple folders to multiple systems at a time. Syncthing is very simple, portable, yet powerful tool in terms of installation and usage. Since all files\/folders are directly transferred from one computer to another computer, you don\u2019t have to worry about purchasing extra space from your Cloud provider. All you need is very stable LAN\/WAN connection and enough disk space on your systems. It supports all modern operating systems, including GNU\/Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, and ofcourse Android.<\/p>\n
Installation<\/h2>\n
For the purpose of this tutorial, We will be using two systems, one is running with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and another one is running with Ubuntu 14.10 server. To easily recognize these two systems, we will be calling them using names\u00a0system1<\/strong>, and\u00a0system2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n System1 Details:<\/strong><\/p>\n System2 Details:<\/strong><\/p>\n Run the following commands on both system to create the user for Syncthing and the directory to be synced between two systems:<\/p>\n You should do the following steps on both System 1 and System 2.<\/p>\n Download the latest version from the\u00a0official download page<\/strong><\/a>. As I am using 64bit system, I downloaded the 6bbit package.<\/p>\n Extract the download file:<\/p>\n Cd to the extracted folder:<\/p>\n Copy the excutable file \u201csyncthing\u201d to\u00a0$PATH<\/strong>:<\/p>\n Now, run the following command to run the syncthing for the first time.<\/p>\n When you run the above command, syncthing will generate a configuration and some keys and then start the admin GUI in your browser. You should see something like below.<\/p>\n Sample output:<\/p>\n Syncthing has been successfully initialized, and the Web admin interface can be accessed using URL:\u00a0http:\/\/localhost:8080<\/strong>\u00a0from your browser. As you see in the above output, syncthing has automatically created a folder called\u00a0default<\/strong>\u00a0for you, in a directory called\u00a0Sync<\/strong>\u00a0in your\u00a0home<\/strong>\u00a0directory.<\/p>\n By default, Syncthing WebGUI will only be accessed from the localhost itself. To access the WebGUI from the remote systems, you need to do the following changes on both systems.<\/p>\n First, stop the Syncthing initialization process by pressing the CTRL+C. Now, you will be returned back to the Terminal.<\/p>\n Edit file\u00a0config.xml<\/strong>,<\/p>\n Find this directive:<\/p>\n In the\u00a0<address><\/strong>\u00a0field, change\u00a0127.0.0.1:8080<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a00.0.0.0:8080<\/strong>. So, your config.xml will look like below.<\/p>\n Save and close the file.<\/p>\n Now, start again the Syncthing initialization on both systems by entering the following command:<\/p>\n Now, open your browser\u00a0http:\/\/ip-address:8080\/<\/strong>. You will see the following screen,<\/p>\n The WebGUI has two panes. In the left pane, you may see the list of folders to be synced. As I mentioned before, the folder\u00a0default<\/strong>\u00a0has been automatically created for you while initializing Syncthing. If you want to sync more folders, you can add using\u00a0Add Folder<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n In the right pane, you see the number of devices connected. Currently there is only one device, the computer you are running this on.<\/p>\n For the security enhancement, let us enable TLS, and setup administrative user and password to access the WebGUI. To od that, click on the gear button and select\u00a0Settings<\/strong>\u00a0on the top right corner.<\/p>\n Enter the admin username\/password. In my case it is admin\/ubuntu. You should use some strong password. And, check the box that says:\u00a0Use HTTPS for GUI<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Click Save button. Now, you\u2019ll be asked to restart the Syncthing to activate the changes. Click Restart.<\/p>\n Enter the administrative user and password which we configured in the previous steps. In my case it\u2019s\u00a0admin\/ubuntu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n We have secured the WebGUI now. Don\u2019t forget to do the same steps on both server.<\/p>\n To sync folders between systems, you must told them about each other. This is accomplished by exchanging \u201cdevice IDs\u201d. You can find it in the web GUI by selecting the \u201cgear menu\u201d (top right) and \u201cShow ID\u201d.<\/p>\n For example, here is my System 1 ID.<\/p>\n Copy the ID, and go to the another system (system 2) WebGUI. From the second system (system 2) WebGUI window, click on the\u00a0Add Device<\/strong>\u00a0on the right side.<\/p>\n The following screen should appear. Paste the\u00a0System 1 ID<\/strong>\u00a0in the Device section. Enter the Device name(optional). In the Addresses field, you can either enter the IP address of the other system or leave it as default. The default value is\u00a0dynamic<\/strong>. Finally, select the folder to be synced. In our case, the sync folder is\u00a0default<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Once you done, click on the save button. You\u2019ll be asked to restart the Syncthing. Click Restart button to activate the changes.<\/p>\n Now, go to the\u00a0System 1<\/strong>\u00a0WebUI, you\u2019ll see a request has been sent from the System 2 to connect and sync. Click\u00a0Add<\/strong>\u00a0button. Now, the System 2 will ask the System 1 to share and sync the folder called \u201cdefault\u201d. Click\u00a0Share<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n Next restart the Syncthing service on the System 1 to activate the changes.<\/p>\n Wait for few seconds, approximately 60 seconds, and you\u2019ll see the two systems have been successfully connected and synced to each other.<\/p>\n You can verify it under the Add Device section of the WebGUI.<\/p>\n System 1 WebGUI console after adding System 2:<\/p>\n\n
